Laughter Brightens the Day

“Earth laughs in Flowers.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I read this quote on the tea bag of my echinacea tea while trying not to get sick. It made me stop and consider what Emerson could have meant by this statement.

It is an interesting thought, this idea that laughing can produce a physical result. I mean we’ve all heard that rain is God’s tears or lightning is Zeus’ wrath. For a laugh to produce flowers makes my heart happy.

Laughing produces a physical response in our bodies. Our lips turn up, we release air from our lungs and the efforts even burn calories. But those manifestations are just within ourselves.

However, a laugh goes beyond ourselves.

To stick with the metaphor, flowers are there for everyone to see. They will lift the mood of anyone who is near.

When we laugh, we too affect those around us. Laughter is contagious. It is hard to refrain from laughing when you hear it close to you. Laughing lifts our mood and that of those around us. It is also healing to those who are troubled. There’s truth in that old saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.”

So don’t be afraid to laugh. Do it openly and without hesitation. It not only makes you feel better, but also those around you. Just like a flower can lift your spirit, a laugh can brighten your entire day.
